Week 3 | Forreston at Dakota

Dakota

A matchup between the number 4 and 5 ranked teams in Class 1A left viewers satisfied with a slugfest. From the start of the game, it was obvious Forreston versus Dakota wouldn't disappoint.

The Indians kicked off to start the game off as Forreston found out yardage would be tough to come by in the 1st half against Dakota's defense. The first three possessions would all end in punts for both teams in the early stages of the game.

It wasn't until Dakota took over with 1:14 left in the 1st quarter that action and ball movement actually took place. Dakota running back Matt Holste took the ball for a 20 yard gain, followed by a Cade Meier QB keeper for another 15 yard gain found the Indians knocking on the door. Just as Dakota was gaining momentum, the Cardinal defense rose to the occasion picking off a Meier pass at the Forreston 21 yard line.

Forreston would then lean on junior running back Anthony Christensen (14 carries, 150 yards, 1 TD) would march the Cardinals down to the Dakota 6 yard line. Dakota's defense would stiffen, stalling the Cardinals on 4th down. Late in the first half with 3:30 to go until half time, a crucial Dakota drive was stalled in their own territory which forced them to punt. The punt was muffed by the Indians and gave the Cardinals the ball at the Dakota 35 yard line. Forreston would capitalize on this critical error by Dakota as Hunter Daws would find Gavin Fuchs on a 28 yard TD pass with 28 seconds left in the half. The extra point was good as Forreston took a 7-0 lead into half time.

Dakota's first series of the second half saw the wind fall out of Dakota's sails. Meier dropped back to pass and found a wide open Holste for a sure TD pass, but Holste dropped the ball and the Indians lost all momentum. Forreston made them pay for this mishap as they got the ball back and found Christensen running it in from 34 yards out putting the Cardinals up 14-0 to end the 3rd quarter. Matt Akins would find the end zone in the 4th quarter to cap the scoring for the Cardinals and give Forreston the 21-0 victory, their second straight shutout victory over the Indians, after their 8-0 win last year in the 1st round of the playoffs in Dakota.

Akins would finish with 54 yards rushing on 15 carries and 1 TD. Fuchs would have 2 carries for 7 yards and 1 reception for 28 yards and 1 TD on the night. Daws was 2-3 passing for 46 yards for 1 TD and had 5 carries for 6 yards.

For Dakota, Andrew Wenger would finish with 15 carries for 53 yards, Holste had 8 carries for 36 yards, and Meier was 4-13 passing for 25 yards 2 INT and had 4 carries for 31 yards.

Forreston would out gain Dakota 335 yards to 124 on the night.
